The client’s goal was to build an office building “where he would want to practice for the remainder of his career”. The building needed to project a professional atmosphere for his staff. Patients were to enjoy an expansive, yet private, feeling when experiencing the building.   Dr. Piro has a strong appreciation of the Prairie Style of Architecture. Such a style of architecture facilitates overlapping of spaces between the interior and exterior environments. Our main design efforts were focused on the connection between such spaces.   The intimate scale of the entrance canopy lets one appreciate the detailing while being protected from the elements. The exterior brick detailing and rhythm of the entry columns carry through to the lobby and waiting area. The etched glass in the entry door is repeated throughout the project.   The canopy structure carries through to the lobby creating a light shelf. The light shelf is supported by brick pilasters that separate the window seats and children’s nook from the glass clerestory above.   The serene environment of the waiting area establishes a mood for the patients appointment. Down lighting in the ceiling is incorporated in an articulated wood batten pattern.   A single corridor, leading from the lobby, is flanked by patient rooms and support spaces on each side. The exterior glass wall of each patient room is screened with extensive landscaping and protected by large overhangs.   The private office is located at the South/East corner and reflects the seamless manner of the entry area. The basic design detailing was carried through to the furniture design. Face brick, color anodized aluminum sash and copper clad fascias throughout project the building many years into the future with minimal exterior maintenance. The landscaping plan is an essential support of the privacy needs of the exam rooms as well as the terrace areas.
